Five Ways To Monetise Your Podcast

What are some common ways in which we can monetise a podcast? And what should we keep in mind? These are two key questions that fellow podcaster, Holly Cope, and I discussed in our live chat on December 6, 2023. Whether you are about to start podcasting or already established, there are many ways in which you can monetise.

In this blog, I'll recap key points Holly and I talked about so you can choose the best option for you.

Sponsorship

What It Is: Companies pay per episode or sign up to have their products/services advertised in your podcast.

Key Points

  • Select sponsors that resonate with your audience.

  • Consider potential restrictions and exclusivity clauses.

  • Negotiate rates based on your audience size and engagement.

Subscription

What It Is: Offering exclusive content or perks to subscribers who pay a fee.

Key Points

  • Locked episodes, special content, or additional materials can be part of the subscription.

  • Clearly convey the value to encourage subscriptions.

  • Keep the subscription model aligned with your audience's interests.

Affiliate Links

What It Is: Earning a commission by promoting and linking to products/services in your podcast.

Key Points

  • Choose products/services you genuinely recommend.

  • Reach out to companies directly if they don't have an affiliate program listed.

  • Clearly disclose that links are affiliate links.

Promoting Products or Services

What It Is: Directly advertising and promoting your products or services in your podcast.

Key Points

  • Be clear and intentional about your offerings.

  • Have a single, easy-to-follow call-to-action.

  • Repetition is okay; regular listeners may need reminders.

Listener Support

What It Is: Inviting listeners to support your podcast through platforms like Buy Me a Coffee or Kofi.com.

Key Points:

  • Mention listener support during episodes.

  • Be transparent about where the funds will be used.

  • Don't be afraid to ask for support; listeners often appreciate the opportunity.

Reflection

Monetising a podcast doesn't require a massive audience; a small, engaged following can be profitable. Experiment with different options, align them with your audience and communicate the value effectively. Remember, building a revenue stream takes time, so be patient and stay consistent. Happy podcasting!
